A Collection of Twenty-Eight Glass Plate Negatives, Depicting Cowboys, Indians, Rodeo Events, Horse Racing, etc. taken by an anonymous Oregon photographer [c. 1912 –1920]
Item #8135

Including: eight bronc riding action photographs; two photographs of mounted cowboys with cattle, two with buffalo; three group photographs of male & female Indians; seven action shots of horse racing on track; and single shots of: a biplane, a loaded flour wagon and Model A car in front of a warehouse building, a marching band at the race track/rodeo, portrait of young girl, portrait of a woman, shot of trees. The scant information accompanying this group of negatives indicates that the photographer’s surname may have been Andersen or Anderson. He was a wood cutter by trade whose family made their way from Minnesota to Marshfield, Oregon (commonly called Coos Bay). According to the notes, our part-time photographer built the camera that he used to obtain these images. It is likely that many of these photographs were taken at the Pendleton Roundup in its early years. The show consisted of bronc riding, horse races, Indian dances, a parade, and other attractions. Plates are uncleaned; one bronc image cracked in half, one with hairline crack; lower right corner out of one Indian scene; occasional failure at edges and corners. Nine contact prints that we had made show wonderfully clear images. Very good condition overall.
