The first substantive study of the founders of the Taos art colony, Laura Bickerstaff's Pioneer Artists of Taos was originally published in a small edition in 1955. Although soon out of print, the book quickly became an indispensable source for all subsequent research on painting in New Mexico. This revised edition is twice as long as the first edition, includes Ernest L. Blumenschein's original introduction and Bickerstaff's studies of the six founding members of the Taos Society of Artists--Joseph H. Sharp, Oscar E. Berninghaus, Ernest L. Blumenschein, Bert G. Phillips, E. Irving Couse, and W. Herbert Dunton--with revisions and corrections to bring the text up to date. New introductory sections on the history and artistic accomplishment of the Taos Society have been added.
