[AUTOMOTIVE]. Lot of 15 copy photographs from the files of the Automobile Club of Southern California for articles in its monthly magazine, Touring Topics, [c. 1930] Item #5927
22 black & white early file photos; various sizes, most approx. 8" x 10"; typed captions affixed to bottom edge; with original file folder. In 1909 The Automobile Club of Southern California published Touring Topics to provide a chronicle of landscapes and destinations for automotive tourism, featuring extensive coverage of desert and coastal regions of California, national parks of the American West and Hawaii. Twelve of the captions also indicate author as Frederick C. Russell and the title of his article for which the image was to be used. Russell wrote much about the dawn of the auto age, and wrote many pieces for Touring Topics, under the editorship of Phil Townsend Hanna. Some of the images include: "The Birth of the Car" showing miles of colling conveyor in the modern plant that make it possible to cool castings before they are handled. Two shots of of the "modern' bus of 1930 for "Follow That Bus!" Several nice images for "There's No Place Like the Automobile" show stylish women of the period in the "well designed home" of the automobile. Great image not attributed to a Russell article shows a car equipped with a gasoline stove camped out in the rough. Very good condition. |
